The Libertines are currently touring smaller venues (“We’re excited to be going back to our roots in these small sweaty clubs”, Pete Doherty told NME in a recent interview ) to showcase All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade, their first album in nine years, which features themes of introspection and growth.
Back in the early 2000s the Libertines were leading the indie rock wave. Despite their troubled history, marked by numerous breakdowns, a decade-long hiatus and Pete Doherty’s widely publicized struggles with drug addiction, the band appeared revitalized, playing with a fresh sense of direction and cohesion. In particular, despite their turbulent history, Pete and Carl’s bond shone through the show.
Pete, preceded by Carl Barat, bassist John Hassall and drummer Gary Powell, stepped out to the cheers of the crowd in the sold-out venue.
Opening with the rousing “Up The Bracket,” the audience was instantly taken back to the prime days of indie. “Night of the Hunter” and “Shiver” were embraced with as much fervor as the cherished classics. Among them, like “Music When The Lights Go Out,” “Can’t Stand Me Now,” and “Don’t Look Back Into the Sun”, which wrapped up the show.
The Libertines delivered a dazzling performance and showed they haven’t lost their touch for crafting catchy tunes and storytelling lyrics, keeping their raw, captivating edge .
