ROCK ZOOM

The Smashing Pumpkins

June 28, 2024 – Luxexpo Open Air

American alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins performed at Luxexpo Open Air blessed by a rare clear sky and warm weather.

The 2-hour set is a balanced mix of old and new songs, starting with “The Everlasting Gaze.”

Billy Corgan, with his trademark shaved head, was cloaked in a vampiresque black gown and had a mysterious symbol smeared on his forehead.

Corgan has a commanding presence on stage and exudes an almost hypnotic energy with an enigmatic aura that captivates the audience from the moment he steps into the spotlight.

The first three songs hit the audience with crunchy guitars and an onslaught of intensity and strobe lights.

The performance was met with enthusiasm especially during classics like “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” and “Disarm.” As the triumphant “despite all my rage…” line rang out, the crowd erupted, turning the floor into a frenzy of movement. The concert highlighted the band’s ability to blend their alternative rock roots with a heavier, more metallic edge. New addition to the band is Kiki Wong, a talented guitarist that combines charisma with dynamic and skilled metal riffs.

Fans were treated to an interesting cover of U2’s “Zoo Station” and to Billy’s funny anecdote about being out in old Luxembourg the previous night involving a taxi driver who did not have a clue who he was…

The show wrapped up on a high note with the powerful hard-rock anthems “Cherub Rock” and “Zero.”

The show was flawless – the Smashing Pumpkins still burn with an intense fire.
