Opening for Scorpions
Wow! That’s the first word coming to my mind from the moment the band took to the stage. You would not believe these guys have been around for more than three decades.
With their funk-infused hard rock style, their performance was seamless from the outset, with Nuno Bettencourt delivering his guitar heroics. Extreme have recently released their first album in 15 years, “Six”, comprising the lead single, “Rise”, which has such an inconceivable guitar solo that sounds like something coming from another realm; seeing Nuno playing it live is jaw-dropping… just a shame that we could barely hear it : “Rise” was played without PA system – the band overran and they were cut off (rules are rules).
Even though Bettencourt’s guitar is the magnet of the show, this is not a band centred around a single guitar virtuoso. Instead, they exhibited a tight, richly integrated performance that highlighted their collective talent .
Frontman Gary Cherone’s voice is full of character, perfectly made for both ballad and hard-rock tunes, and is matched by his boundless energy on stage. Bassist Pat Badger and drummer Kevin Figueiredo hold down the rhythm that allows Bettencourt to go wild with each song. Their tight and cohesive performance is a testament to their skill and chemistry, adding depth and power to the overall sound.
The emotionally compelling moment came when Nuno and Gary sat on stools and duetted to the classic ballad “More Than Words” . The crowd needed absolutely no encouragement to sing for (and along with) the two men on stage. Prior to that, Nuno tore up his acoustic guitar delivering “Midnight Express”.
Extreme’s concert was a masterful demonstration of rock and funk brilliance; it was a celebration of music, talent, and enduring passion.
